i'm thinking about getting a macbook. i thought i'd get an ibook, but it seems the macbook is replacing the ibook. and for the same cost as the 14" ibook, i can get the brand new 13.3" macbook.

but i need your input. to mac or not to mac? i'm thinking of visiting the apple store this weekend, so your timely response is appreciated. gracias :)

Well, I think you should Mac. I love my iMac. While I've figured out PCs cuz I have to, Macs are just less frustrating. I'll send you what my aunt wrote about her switch to Mac.

This is the breakdown as I know it. Mac is more trendy, better with graphic/video applications and easy to use. Other PCs are cheaper but less cool looking. You will also have more options outside of apple world. I personally have the Dell Inspiron 700m and I love it for the size and it can do what I want it to. Not sure how much that helps.

The apple hardware is generally nicer than a pc. Also, with a macbook, you can are able to run windows if you really want to or the default os x. Plus, while jon may love his current dell, he doesn't mention anything about that last one...

It's not the trendy, it's the fact that they work better, faster and don't crash. I don't have any major problem with my PC, but the Macs are so much nicer to use once you get used to it.

Also, for what the average person is going to use it for - email, word processing, internet, perhaps graphic design sort of stuff, the Apple world is a happy place to live, an easier, less virus-ridden place to live.

If you get a good PC laptop, it might be somewhat cheaper than the mac, but I think it's worth the little extra money.

I am a huge proponent of the PC! I love it. I love the organization and the familiarity and the ease. Mark would argue otherwise, but I say save your money and go for the PC. Shell

hmmm, these are good comments. i was so PR0-mac until i saw the pricetag at the end of the day - nearly $1700. i can't decide if it really is worth that much. the fact that i have to BUY microsoft windows for apple just seems ridiculous. $149 for word and excel? c'mon.

i'm hoping to buy one tomorrow, so if you would say, "mary, i'd definitely buy the mac" or "hmmm, when you put it that way, maybe i'd go dell ..." i'd appreciate it.

muchas gracias. and thanks, abby, also for your aunt's note!! i've reread it a couple of times for good encouragement :)

How is it $1700 at the end of the day?? Anyway, if it were me, I would still buy the mac. From now on I will buy macs, regardless of cost. I have too many problems with my computer getting slowed down with stuff I don't understand, spyware etc.

Also, my boss was talking about Dell laptops the other day and bashing them. He knows about computers, but he also probably uses them for a lot more advanced stuff than you ever would. Do you have to pay $150 over the $1700 for the software? That's unfortunate.

My dad bought my computer off a web site, it's an Acer, I think you have to buy them online, and overall it's pretty nice. Well, other than the fact that there was a manufacturing problem with the laptop itself and we had to send it back twice to get fixed, but that was sort of a freak thing I think.

Did you end up getting one?

i mac'd! i visited the apple store on michigan yesterday and was planning on buying it there, but found a way to save about $120 by buying it online to get the exact specifications i wanted. i'm WAY excited.

also pretty neat because going in the store offered me a chance to hear about the free printer/scanner with macbook purchase. yippee!! so so so so excited. .the whole thing ended up costing me only about $1515 with taxes. woohoo!!!

many thanks to all for your input :)

with each comment i grew more and more anxious that you had abandoned the mac ship and climbed aboard the PC raft. i think there is really no comparison. i have used PCs (for work) for a long time, and they have all had lots of problemas...i love my new mac, and it has yet to have any glitches at all. good choice!

anyway, i really wrote to tell you that most schools can get you office for free or $30 at the most. you work at a school right? did you quit yet?

cory, yay!! i'm glad you like the mac, too. i am feeling very confident in my decision and appreciate the affirmation.

and yes, my plan is to get windows through my school yet. i've got 22 more days here, so i'm getting it in just under the wire!

I love Cory's last comment. I also felt you were slipping away, making the same mistake I did. I so wish I would have just paid the extra few hundred to my dad last year and gotten a mac.

I'm glad you're here in MacLand! I'm curious what you'll think of the Macbook when you get it. I want to invest in a laptop so I can do grad work away from my apartment, but if I bite that bullet I'm not sure which Mac to go with. And of course, like one person needs two computers...

Good job Mary! You are me new best friend!
I think you will be happy with the Mac. They really are great. My three year old powerbook still runs better then most new PC's.

oh my gosh Mary! I can't belive I totally missed this post! I'm soooo glad to hear you went with a mac! Mac's are the way to go, hands down for sure! No contest! They are EASY! And I don't really think PC users can comment on the Mac unless they've actually used the Mac, day in and day out...like say for a work situation. My first experience EVER on a computer was a PC and I've used a PC at all my jobs until the one I'm at now. hands down, the Mac is the easiest and does more things than the PC. Ya, maybe the mac doesn't come with Word or Excell but it does come with a ton of other FREE applications like itunes, imovie, iWeb, iDVD......applications that you'd have to pay extra for on the PC. it's crazy what you can do with a mac!

of course mary you know all this since you actually got one! how are you liking it so far? i'm so jealous! my hubby just got the macbook. have you played with photobooth yet? so much fun!

Well, I would never rain on a Mac Parade, but I was surprised my perspective wasn't expressed by anyone else in 16 posts. I'm on the Dell laptop I got a couple months ago. $600, including wireless and a free printer (I got software through work, too). Even if I got the world's worst computer virus, causing my machine to ooze toxic sludge and bite me, I could buy 1.5 more machines for the price. I'll continue to use a PC for the same reasons I drive a '95 Ford Escort.
